Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the option that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 18 to 22.
Plastic is widely used in modern life as it is practical, lightweight, and inexpensive. However, its convenience has created a serious environmental problem. (18) ____________. Many animals become trapped in plastic debris, while marine life often eats tiny plastic particles. In addition, a large amount of the United Kingdom’s plastic waste is dumped and burned overseas, affecting people’s health.
One major issue with plastic is its durability. (19) ____________. Because it is cheap and often disposable, plastic has contributed to a throwaway culture. As a result, a huge amount of plastic waste is produced each year. Much of this waste ends up in the oceans, (20) ____________. UK supermarkets alone generate hundreds of thousands of tonnes of plastic packaging annually.
Another concern is microplastics, (21) ____________. Synthetic clothing releases microfibres during washing, and microbeads in personal care products can pass through water systems into the ocean. These particles have been found worldwide, even in remote areas such as Antarctica.
Plastic pollution harms wildlife and ecosystems. Larger animals may become entangled in plastic waste, (22) ____________. These particles have even been detected in humans. Although some actions, such as banning certain plastics, have been taken, stronger global measures are urgently needed to reduce plastic use and protect the planet.

Question 18:
A. Plastic waste is now found almost everywhere, especially in oceans
B. Plastic materials, especially in oceans now find almost everywhere
C. People can be recycled and reused plastic materials in different ways
D. Plastic pollution can't be seen anywhere, especially in the oceans any longer
Giải thích: * A. Plastic waste is now found almost everywhere, especially in oceans - ĐÚNG: Câu này đóng vai trò câu chủ đề (topic sentence), giới thiệu phạm vi ô nhiễm để dẫn dắt vào các ví dụ về động vật ở câu sau.
- B. Plastic materials, especially in oceans now find almost everywhere - SAI: Sai cấu trúc bị động; rác nhựa không thể tự "tìm thấy" mà phải là "are found".
- C. People can be recycled and reused plastic materials in different ways - SAI: Sai ngữ pháp nghiêm trọng (con người bị tái chế) và lệch mạch nội dung đang nói về tác hại.
- D. Plastic pollution can't be seen anywhere, especially in the oceans any longer - SAI: Trái ngược hoàn toàn với thực tế và nội dung bài viết về sự lan rộng của ô nhiễm nhựa.
Question 19:
A. That makes plastic useless; moreover, it also decreases its widespread daily usage
B. This makes plastic useful; however, it also means it does not break down easily
C. Although this makes plastic useful, but it also encourages broken-down consumption
D. Because this makes plastic versatile, otherwise it also leads to overproduction worldwide
iải thích: * A. That makes plastic useless; moreover, it also decreases its widespread daily usage - SAI: Trái nghĩa với thực tế là nhựa rất hữu ích và được sử dụng rộng rãi.
- B. This makes plastic useful; however, it also means it does not break down easily - ĐÚNG: Giải thích tính hai mặt của sự bền bỉ (durability): vừa có lợi cho sử dụng vừa có hại cho môi trường.
- C. Although this makes plastic useful, but it also encourages broken-down consumption - SAI: Sai ngữ pháp do dùng cả "Although" và "but" trong cùng một câu.
- D. Because this makes plastic versatile, otherwise it also leads to overproduction worldwide - SAI: Sai liên từ logic; "otherwise" không phù hợp để nối hai vế trong ngữ cảnh này.
Question 20:
A. a great deal of plastic goes into the sea every minute and that it estimated
B. but it reported that large amounts of plastic are burned in a minute
C. so every minute a truckload of plastic estimates that it enters the sea
D. and it is estimated that a truckload of plastic enters the sea every minute
Giải thích: * A. a great deal of plastic goes into the sea every minute and that it estimated - SAI: Thiếu động từ "to be" trong cấu trúc bị động "it is estimated".
- B. but it reported that large amounts of plastic are burned in a minute - SAI: Sai ngữ cảnh vì đang nói rác đổ vào biển, không phải bị đốt; thiếu "is" trước "reported".
- C. so every minute a truckload of plastic estimates that it enters the sea - SAI: Vô nghĩa vì "xe tải rác" không thể thực hiện hành động "ước tính".
- D. and it is estimated that a truckload of plastic enters the sea every minute - ĐÚNG: Cấu trúc bị động chuẩn xác để cung cấp một số liệu minh họa cụ thể cho việc rác nhựa vào đại dương.
Question 21:
A. when plastic breaks down which tiny plastic particles formed
B. what are small natural particles created by ocean currents broken down
C. which are tiny plastic particles formed when plastic breaks down
D. whose tiny organic materials produced by marine organisms
Giải thích: * A. when plastic breaks down which tiny plastic particles formed - SAI: Cấu trúc lộn xộn, thiếu động từ chính cho mệnh đề quan hệ.
- B. what are small natural particles created by ocean currents broken down - SAI: Không dùng "what" làm đại từ quan hệ; sai định nghĩa vì nhựa không phải là hạt "tự nhiên".
- C. which are tiny plastic particles formed when plastic breaks down - ĐÚNG: Đại từ quan hệ "which" giải thích chính xác định nghĩa và cơ chế hình thành của vi nhựa.
- D. whose tiny organic materials produced by marine organisms - SAI: Dùng sai đại từ quan hệ "whose" và sai định nghĩa vì nhựa không phải vật chất "hữu cơ".
Question 22:
A. meanwhile microplastics ingested by smaller organisms, the food chain reducing toxins
B. while smaller organisms ingest microplastics, allowing toxins to enter the food chain
C. permitting toxins pass into enter the food chain as smaller organisms consume microplastics
D. letting harmful substances to enter the food chain, while tiny organisms take in microplastics
Giải thích: * A. meanwhile microplastics ingested by smaller organisms, the food chain reducing toxins - SAI: Trái nghĩa logic vì chuỗi thức ăn làm lan truyền độc tố chứ không phải làm giảm (reducing) chúng.
- B. while smaller organisms ingest microplastics, allowing toxins to enter the food chain - ĐÚNG: Tạo sự đối lập giữa động vật lớn (bị kẹt) và động vật nhỏ (ăn nhựa), giải thích cách độc tố vào chuỗi thức ăn.
- C. permitting toxins pass into enter the food chain as smaller organisms consume microplastics - SAI: Sai cấu trúc khi dùng hai động từ "pass" và "enter" liền nhau không có liên kết.
- D. letting harmful substances to enter the food chain, while tiny organisms take in microplastics - SAI: Sai cấu trúc "let + O + V-nguyên thể" (không có "to").
