Cities That Breathe Every rainy season, millions of urban residents watch the streets fill with water and wonder whether their city was ever designed with nature in mind. For most of the twentieth century, the answer was no. Cities expanded rapidly, covering farmland with concrete and replacing rivers with pipe systems, and the result has been more and more flooding, less and less green space, and a steady rise in urban temperatures. The more impervious surfaces a city has, the harder it becomes for rainwater to go anywhere but up. That is precisely the concern that landscape architect Kongjian Yu set out to deal with. Growing up in rural China, he watched a slow, willow-lined river transform into a dangerous, channelised stream after modernisation removed its natural buffers. Motivated by that loss, Yu developed the sponge city concept, which seeks to restore what urbanisation has taken away. Rather than channelling stormwater away, sponge cities use ponds, wetlands, and plantings to absorb and store it, improving both ecological health and the quality of life for residents. Permeable surfaces replace sealed pavements, rain gardens collect runoff, and green roofs reduce the load on drainage infrastructure. This approach has since been adopted at over 640 sites across 250 municipalities in China. The benefits, however, go well beyond flood control. Vertical forests and tree-lined corridors help reduce urban heat, lower residents' carbon footprint, and make cities more comfortable to live in. These are not decorative additions; they are climate adaptation strategies that respond to several problems at once. Resilience, experts argue, is only unlocked when adaptation and mitigation are pursued hand in hand, working with nature rather than against it. Whether cities worldwide can expand green infrastructure fast enough remains a concern among urban planners. But for communities that have lived with seasonal flooding for years, a park that drinks the storm feels less like a design trend and more like a genuine solution. [Adapted from Esri Blog] Question 23: Which of the following is true according to paragraph 4? A. Some urban planners are still unsure whether green infrastructure can be expanded quickly enough. A. Some urban planners are still unsure whether green infrastructure can be expanded quickly enough: Một số nhà quy hoạch đô thị vẫn chưa chắc liệu hạ tầng xanh có thể được mở rộng đủ nhanh hay không. B. Cities worldwide have already expanded green infrastructure fast enough to prevent seasonal flooding: Các thành phố trên thế giới đã mở rộng hạ tầng xanh đủ nhanh để ngăn lũ theo mùa. C. Communities affected by flooding usually see green parks as only a fashionable design idea: Các cộng đồng bị ảnh hưởng bởi lũ thường xem công viên xanh chỉ là một ý tưởng thiết kế thời thượng. D. Urban planners believe sponge cities are no longer useful for areas with seasonal flooding: Các nhà quy hoạch cho rằng thành phố bọt biển không còn hữu ích cho những khu vực bị lũ theo mùa. Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 4: “Whether cities worldwide can expand green infrastructure fast enough remains a concern among urban planners. But for communities that have lived with seasonal flooding for years, a park that drinks the storm feels less like a design trend and more like a genuine solution.” Cụm “remains a concern among urban planners” khớp với ý “some urban planners are still unsure”. A. sealed /siːld/ (adj): bị bịt kín, không cho nước thấm qua B. crowded /ˈkraʊdɪd/ (adj): đông đúc C. uneven /ʌnˈiːvn/ (adj): không bằng phẳng D. fragile /ˈfrædʒaɪl/ (adj): dễ vỡ, mong manh Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 1: “Cities expanded rapidly, covering farmland with concrete and replacing rivers with pipe systems, and the result has been more and more flooding, less and less green space, and a steady rise in urban temperatures. The more impervious surfaces a city has, the harder it becomes for rainwater to go anywhere but up.” A. Letting some paved areas allow rainwater to pass into the ground: Cho phép một số khu vực lát nền để nước mưa thấm xuống đất. B. Using planted areas to collect runoff before it overloads drains: Dùng các khu vực trồng cây để thu nước chảy tràn trước khi nó làm quá tải cống thoát nước. C. Increasing the speed at which stormwater is pushed through pipes: Tăng tốc độ đẩy nước mưa qua các đường ống. D. Holding excess rain temporarily in ponds and wetland-like spaces: Giữ tạm thời lượng mưa dư trong ao và các không gian giống đất ngập nước. Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 2: “Rather than channelling stormwater away, sponge cities use ponds, wetlands, and plantings to absorb and store it... Permeable surfaces replace sealed pavements, rain gardens collect runoff, and green roofs reduce the load on drainage infrastructure.” C trái với ý “Rather than channelling stormwater away”. Đáp án: C Question 26: Từ “its” trong đoạn 2 quy chiếu đến điều gì? A. a willow-lined river: một dòng sông có hàng liễu ven bờ B. rural China: vùng nông thôn Trung Quốc C. a modern drainage canal: một kênh thoát nước hiện đại D. modernization: sự hiện đại hóa Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 2: “Growing up in rural China, he watched a slow, willow-lined river transform into a dangerous, channelised stream after modernisation removed its natural buffers.” => its = a willow-lined river Đáp án: A Question 27: Câu nào sau đây diễn đạt lại đúng nhất câu được gạch chân trong đoạn 3? “Resilience, experts argue, is only unlocked when adaptation and mitigation are pursued hand in hand, working with nature rather than against it.” Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 3: “These are not decorative additions; they are climate adaptation strategies that respond to several problems at once. Resilience, experts argue, is only unlocked when adaptation and mitigation are pursued hand in hand, working with nature rather than against it.” A. Experts believe that cities can only achieve full resilience if they prioritize adaptation strategies over mitigation while cooperating with natural forces: Các chuyên gia tin rằng các thành phố chỉ có thể đạt được khả năng chống chịu đầy đủ nếu ưu tiên thích ứng hơn giảm thiểu trong khi hợp tác với các lực tự nhiên. Sai. Câu gốc nói adaptation and mitigation phải đi “hand in hand”, tức song song, không nói ưu tiên adaptation hơn mitigation. B. According to experts, true resilience is exclusively attained when adaptation and mitigation are executed simultaneously in harmony with natural processes: Theo các chuyên gia, khả năng chống chịu thực sự chỉ đạt được khi thích ứng và giảm thiểu được thực hiện đồng thời, hài hòa với các quá trình tự nhiên. Đúng. “executed simultaneously” diễn đạt lại “pursued hand in hand”, còn “in harmony with natural processes” diễn đạt lại “working with nature rather than against it”. C. Experts argue that resilience requires adaptation and mitigation to be developed separately, provided that both ultimately seek to control natural elements: Các chuyên gia cho rằng khả năng chống chịu đòi hỏi thích ứng và giảm thiểu phải được phát triển riêng rẽ, miễn là cả hai cuối cùng đều nhằm kiểm soát các yếu tố tự nhiên. Sai. Câu gốc nói hai yếu tố này phải đi cùng nhau, không phải tách riêng; đồng thời bài nói làm việc cùng tự nhiên, không phải kiểm soát tự nhiên. D. It is suggested by experts that combining adaptation and mitigation will automatically guarantee resilience, regardless of how extreme natural events become: Các chuyên gia gợi ý rằng việc kết hợp thích ứng và giảm thiểu sẽ tự động đảm bảo khả năng chống chịu, bất kể các hiện tượng tự nhiên cực đoan đến mức nào. Sai. Câu gốc nói đây là điều kiện để mở ra resilience, không nói “automatically guarantee” hay “regardless of how extreme natural events become”. Đáp án: B Question 28: Đoạn nào bàn về việc hạ tầng hấp thụ nước hoạt động như một chiến lược thích ứng khí hậu đa mục đích? Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 3: “The benefits, however, go well beyond flood control. Vertical forests and tree-lined corridors help reduce urban heat, lower residents' carbon footprint, and make cities more comfortable to live in. These are not decorative additions; they are climate adaptation strategies that respond to several problems at once.” Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 4: “Whether cities worldwide can expand green infrastructure fast enough remains a concern among urban planners. But for communities that have lived with seasonal flooding for years, a park that drinks the storm feels less like a design trend and more like a genuine solution.” A. superficial /ˌsuːpəˈfɪʃl/ (adj): hời hợt, chỉ ở bề mặt, không thật sự sâu sắc B. temporary /ˈtempərəri/ (adj): tạm thời C. risky /ˈrɪski/ (adj): rủi ro D. impractical /ɪmˈpræktɪkl/ (adj): không thực tế Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 4: “But for communities that have lived with seasonal flooding for years, a park that drinks the storm feels less like a design trend and more like a genuine solution.” => genuine >< superficial Đáp án: A |
