Multiculturalism By lunchtime, the school yard has turned into a small map of the world. Students crowd around food stalls, compare spring rolls with fish and chips, and take photos of costumes they call unique or familiar. Such scenes gain in popularity because they are easy to enjoy. They seem to bring people together. That is the appeal of multiculturalism in its public form: visible and shareable. But a society is not truly multicultural just because difference looks good in a picture. In many respects, the real test begins after the music stops. [I] Multiculturalism matters less as celebration than as arrangement: who gets heard, whose beliefs are treated seriously, and whether people from a wide range of backgrounds can participate without having to sand down their cultural identity first. [II] Only when diversity is linked to inclusion does it become more than decoration. [III] It asks institutions, not just individuals, to keep an open mind. [IV] Public culture is shaped by markets, platforms, and current trends. Difference can raise awareness; it can also be packaged. Once culture is turned into content, what should deepen understanding is often flattened into something easy to consume. A tradition with roots in memory and struggle becomes a feature or a brand. On the other hand, visibility is not worthless. People often learn about unfamiliar lives because a film, a song, or a creator first catches their attention. By contrast, the line is crossed when representation stops inviting people to interact with complexity and starts teaching them to consume identity. That is why multiculturalism needs both warmth and limits. It should encourage exchange, creativity, and a stronger sense of identity, but it cannot excuse practices that deny dignity or basic rights. Nor should any dominant culture demand that others simply blend in for the sake of comfort. A mature society does not make people choose between belonging and self-respect. It builds conditions in which different groups can connect with one another, reflect on their differences, and remain fully human in the process. “Read that way, cultural diversity is part of how a community learns to adapt to complexity.” Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 2: “In many respects, the real test begins after the music stops. Lí do là câu ngay trước đó nói: “Only when diversity is linked to inclusion does it become more than decoration.” Câu chèn “Read that way...” nối tiếp trực tiếp ý này: nếu hiểu diversity theo hướng gắn với inclusion, thì cultural diversity sẽ trở thành một phần của cách cộng đồng thích nghi với complexity. Sau đó, câu “It asks institutions, not just individuals, to keep an open mind.” tiếp tục triển khai đại từ It rất tự nhiên, trong đó It quay lại ý vừa được phát triển: multiculturalism/cultural diversity understood in that meaningful way. Đáp án: B Question 32: Trong đoạn 1, mệnh đề “looks good in a picture” gần nghĩa nhất với đáp án nào? A. becomes easier to organise in public: trở nên dễ tổ chức hơn ở nơi công cộng B. reflects daily equality in a community: phản ánh sự bình đẳng hằng ngày trong cộng đồng C. appears attractive only at a superficial level: trông hấp dẫn nhưng chỉ ở mức bề mặt D. invites debate about cultural policy: gợi ra tranh luận về chính sách văn hoá Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 1: “That is the appeal of multiculturalism in its public form: visible and shareable. But a society is not truly multicultural just because difference looks good in a picture.” Vì vậy, cụm này gần nghĩa nhất với ý “appears attractive only at a superficial level.” => looks good in a picture ≈ appears attractive only at a superficial level Đáp án: C Question 33: Từ “it” ở đoạn 2 chỉ điều gì? A. decoration: sự trang trí B. inclusion: sự hòa nhập C. diversity: sự đa dạng D. community: cộng đồng Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 2: “Only when diversity is linked to inclusion does it become more than decoration. It asks institutions, not just individuals, to keep an open mind.” Đại từ it trong câu “does it become more than decoration” quay lại danh từ gần nhất và hợp logic nhất là diversity. Câu có cấu trúc: Only when diversity is linked to inclusion does it become more than decoration => chỉ khi diversity gắn với inclusion thì diversity mới trở thành điều gì đó hơn cả “decoration”. A. Diversity becomes meaningful when it is linked to inclusion. B. Institutions as well as individuals are expected to adapt. C. People should be able to participate without sanding down their identity. D. Public celebration alone proves that a society is truly multicultural. Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 2: “Multiculturalism matters less as celebration than as arrangement: who gets heard, whose beliefs are treated seriously, and whether people from a wide range of backgrounds can participate without having to sand down their cultural identity first. Only when diversity is linked to inclusion does it become more than decoration. It asks institutions, not just individuals, to keep an open mind.” Đoạn 2 nói rất rõ multiculturalism matters less as celebration than as arrangement, nghĩa là chỉ public celebration thôi là không đủ. Trong khi đó, A, B, C đều bám trực tiếp vào nội dung đoạn: diversity phải linked to inclusion; institutions cũng có trách nhiệm; và con người phải được participate mà không phải sand down identity. Đáp án: D Question 35: Từ “flattened” ở đoạn 3 gần nghĩa TRÁI NGƯỢC nhất với từ nào? A. shortened: bị rút ngắn B. enriched: được làm phong phú hơn C. hidden: bị che giấu D. delayed: bị trì hoãn Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 3: “Once culture is turned into content, what should deepen understanding is often flattened into something easy to consume.” A. It becomes meaningful only when it stays outside markets and media. B. It usually harms understanding because audiences prefer entertainment. C. It can begin curiosity, but it is not enough when culture is reduced to easy content. D. It matters less than tradition because people rarely learn from creators. Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 3: “Difference can raise awareness; it can also be packaged. Once culture is turned into content, what should deepen understanding is often flattened into something easy to consume… On the other hand, visibility is not worthless. People often learn about unfamiliar lives because a film, a song, or a creator first catches their attention. By contrast, the line is crossed when representation stops inviting people to interact with complexity and starts teaching them to consume identity.” Nó có thể mở đầu sự chú ý và tò mò, vì people often learn through a film, song, or creator. Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 3: “Public culture is shaped by markets, platforms, and current trends. By contrast, the line is crossed when representation stops inviting people to interact with complexity and starts teaching them to consume identity.” Sai. Đáp án này bị quá mức ở từ mainly và đặc biệt sai ở cụm stop people from learning anything serious. Bài không nói markets/media chỉ có hại; ngược lại, tác giả vẫn thừa nhận people often learn because a film, song, or creator catches attention. C. Các truyền thống văn hoá an toàn nhất khi tránh phim ảnh, âm nhạc và nền tảng trực tuyến vì chúng có thể biến truyền thống thành sản phẩm thương mại. Sai. Đoạn văn không hề khuyên culture should avoid films, songs, platforms. Đáp án: A Question 38: Câu nào diễn đạt lại đúng nhất câu gạch chân ở đoạn 4: “A mature society does not make people choose between belonging and self-respect.”? Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 4: “That is why multiculturalism needs both warmth and limits. It should encourage exchange, creativity, and a stronger sense of identity, but it cannot excuse practices that deny dignity or basic rights. Nor should any dominant culture demand that others simply blend in for the sake of comfort. A mature society does not make people choose between belonging and self-respect.” A. Cultural festivals should be replaced by stricter legal controls on public expression. B. Policies that expand inclusion while rejecting practices that violate dignity would fit the author’s view. C. Dominant cultures are incapable of genuine exchange with minority groups in modern societies. D. Individual openness matters more than any institutional response to diversity. Căn cứ vào thông tin: Đoạn 2: “Only when diversity is linked to inclusion does it become more than decoration. It asks institutions, not just individuals, to keep an open mind.” Đoạn 4: “It should encourage exchange, creativity, and a stronger sense of identity, but it cannot excuse practices that deny dignity or basic rights.” D sai vì đoạn 2 nói rõ phải là institutions, not just individuals. Sai. Bài không hề chủ trương remain separate. Ngược lại, đoạn 4 nói các nhóm cần connect with one another và reflect on differences. Đáp án: B |
