Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 1 to 10.
Urban life has always involved a balancing of opportunities and rewards against dangers and stress; its motivating force is, in the broadest sense, money. Opportunities to make money mean competition and competition is stressful; it is often at its most intense in the largest cities, where opportunities are greatest. The presence of huge numbers of people inevitably involves more conflict, more travelling, the overloading of public services and exposure to those deviants and criminals who are drawn to the rich pickings of great cities. Crime has always flourished in the relative anonymity of urban life, but today's ease of movement makes its control more difficult than ever; there is much evidence that its extent has a direct relationship to the size of communities. City dwellers may become trapped in their homes by the fear of crime around them.
As a defence against these developments, city dwellers tend to use various strategies to try and reduce the pressures upon themselves: contacts with other people are generally made brief and impersonal; doors are kept locked; telephone numbers may be ex-directory; journeys outside the home are usually hurried, rather than a source of pleasure. There are other strategies too which are positively harmful to the individual; for example, reducing awareness through drugs or alcohol. Furthermore, all these defensive forms of behaviour are harmful to society in general; they cause widespread loneliness and destroy the community’s concern for its members. Lack of informal social contact and indifference to the misfortunes of others, if they are not personally known to oneself, are amongst the major causes of urban crime.
Inner areas of cities tend to be abandoned by the more successful and left to those who have done badly in the competitive struggle or who belong to minority groups; these people are then geographically trapped because so much economic activity has migrated to the suburbs and beyond.
Present-day architecture and planning have enormously worsened the human problems of urban life. [I] Old-established neighbourhoods have been ruthlessly swept away, by both public and private organisations, usually to be replaced by huge, ugly, impersonal structures. [II] People have been forced to leave their familiar homes, usually to be rehoused in tower blocks which are drab, inconvenient, and fail to provide any setting for human interaction or support. [III]. Instead, every effort should be made to conserve the human scale of the environment, and to retain familiar landmarks. [IV]

[IV]
Question 1: According to paragraph 1, which of the following is NOT mentioned as an inevitable consequence of the vast population density in cities?
A. Overburdening of public service systems
B. Increasing daily travel time
C. Increased levels of conflict among people D. Higher incidence of mental health problems
A. Quá tải các hệ thống dịch vụ công (đề cập)
B. Tăng thời gian di chuyển hàng ngày (đề cập)
C. Mức độ xung đột giữa con người gia tăng (đề cập)
D. Tỷ lệ mắc các vấn đề sức khỏe tâm thần cao hơn (KHÔNG đề cập))
Giải thích:
∙ A. Overburdening of public service systems – SAI: Thông tin trong bài có nhắc đến cụm "the overloading of public services".
∙ B. Increasing daily travel time – SAI: Thông tin trong bài có ghi nhận cụm "more travelling".
∙ C. Increased levels of conflict among people – SAI: Thông tin trong bài chỉ ra cụm "more conflict".
Question 2: The word "deviants" in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ____________.
A. activists
B. strangers C. offenders
D. outsiders
A. nhà hoạt động
Ngữ cảnh bài đọc đặt từ này song song với "criminals" ("those deviants and criminals who are drawn to the rich pickings...")
Question 3: Which of the following statements best summarizes paragraph 1?
A. The growth of large cities increases crime and social strain due to today's ease of movement and overburdened services.
B. Urban life involves a tension between opportunities and pressures, largely shaped by financial motives and competition.
C. The main difficulty of city life lies in managing crime, which is intensified by the ease of movement and anonymity.
D. High population density in cities leads to competition, conflict, and stress among individuals seeking economic success.
(Câu nào sau đây tóm tắt đúng nhất đoạn 1?)
A. Sự phát triển của các thành phố lớn làm tăng tội phạm và căng thẳng xã hội do dễ di chuyển và dịch vụ quá tải (cụ thể hóa quá hẹp - chỉ một khía cạnh)
B. Đời sống đô thị bao gồm sự căng thẳng giữa cơ hội và áp lực, chủ yếu định hình bởi động cơ tài chính và cạnh tranh (đúng - khớp câu mở đầu)
C. Khó khăn chính của đời sống thành phố nằm ở việc quản lý tội phạm (quá hẹp - chỉ tập trung crime)
D. Mật độ dân số cao dẫn đến cạnh tranh, xung đột và căng thẳng (thiếu khía cạnh cơ hội/lợi ích))
Giải thích:
∙ A. The growth of large cities increases crime and social strain due to today's ease of movement and overburdened services. – SAI: Phương án này quá hẹp, chỉ tập trung cụ thể hóa vào khía cạnh tội phạm và dịch vụ quá tải, bỏ sót khía cạnh động lực kinh tế ở đầu đoạn.
∙ B. Urban life involves a tension between opportunities and pressures, largely shaped by financial motives and competition. – ĐÚNG: Đoạn 1 mở đầu bằng câu chủ đề khẳng định cuộc sống đô thị luôn là sự cân bằng giữa cơ hội/phần thưởng với nguy hiểm/áp lực, và động lực cốt lõi là tiền bạc cùng sự cạnh tranh ("Urban life has always involved a balancing of opportunities and rewards against dangers and stress; its motivating force is... money..."). Phương án này tóm tắt trọn vẹn và khái quát nhất nội dung toàn đoạn.
∙ C. The main difficulty of city life lies in managing crime, which is intensified by the ease of movement and anonymity. – SAI: Phương án này bị thu hẹp quá mức khi chỉ xoay quanh khía cạnh quản lý tội phạm đô thị.
∙ D. High population density in cities leads to competition, conflict, and stress among individuals seeking economic success.
Question 4: In paragraph 2, the phrase "these developments" primarily refers to ____________.
A. urban chances, wealth, and rewards
B. city dwellers trapped in their homes
C. rising urban stress, crime, and fear
D. the rich pickings of great cities
∙ C. rising urban stress, crime, and fear – ĐÚNG: Cụm từ "these developments" nằm ở câu đầu đoạn 2 ("As a defence against these developments, city dwellers tend to use various strategies to try and reduce the pressures...").
∙ D. the rich pickings of great cities – SAI: "The rich pickings" (miếng mồi béo bở) là yếu tố thu hút tội phạm, không phải là diễn biến tiêu cực mà người dân phải phòng vệ.
Question 5: Which of the following best paraphrases the underlined sentence in paragraph 2?
A. People who do not have personal acquaintances in the city are more likely to become victims of crime and misfortune.
B. Urban crime is primarily driven by the fact that city dwellers do not know how to help strangers who are in trouble.
C. The main cause of crime in urban areas is that residents are too busy to establish formal social contacts with their neighbors.
D. A significant factor in city crime is the absence of casual social interaction and a lack of concern for strangers' problems.
B. Tội phạm chủ yếu do cư dân KHÔNG BIẾT CÁCH GIÚP người lạ (bịa thông tin)
∙ A. People who do not have personal acquaintances in the city are more likely to become victims of crime and misfortune.
∙ B. Urban crime is primarily driven by the fact that city dwellers do not know how to help strangers who are in trouble. – SAI: Phương án này tự bịa thông tin khi dịch cụm từ sự thờ ơ ("indifference") thành việc "không biết cách giúp đỡ" ("do not know how to help").
∙ C. The main cause of crime in urban areas is that residents are too busy to establish formal social contacts with their neighbors. – SAI: Phương án này làm sai lệch trục từ vựng cốt lõi của câu gốc, đổi cụm liên lạc không chính thức ("informal social contact") thành liên lạc chính thức ("formal social contacts").
∙ D. A significant factor in city crime is the absence of casual social interaction and a lack of concern for strangers' problems. Phương án này đã diễn giải hoàn hảo : "A significant factor in city crime" tương đương "amongst the major causes of urban crime"; "absence of casual social interaction" tương đương "lack of informal social contact" ; và "lack of concern for strangers' problems" tương đương "indifference to the misfortunes of others".
Question 6: The word "ruthlessly" in paragraph 4 is OPPOSITE in meaning to ____________.
A. indifferently
B. efficiently
C. aggressively D. compassionately
A. một cách thờ ơ
Question 7: Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Old neighbourhoods were improved and replaced by large modern buildings that strengthened community interaction and support.
B. There might be little or no significant correlation between the scale of a community and the scope of criminal activity within it.
C. Urban residents often adopt impersonal behaviours that contribute to greater psychological pressure and decreased social isolation.
D. The more affluent move out of inner-city areas, leaving poorer groups confined to places where economic activity has shifted to the suburbs.
A. Các khu phố cũ được CẢI THIỆN và thay bằng nhà hiện đại CỦNG CỐ tương tác cộng đồng (trái nghĩa - bài nói tower blocks "fail to provide setting for human interaction")
B. CÓ THỂ ÍT hoặc KHÔNG có tương quan giữa quy mô cộng đồng và phạm vi tội phạm (trái nghĩa - bài nói "direct relationship to size of communities")
∙ A. Old neighbourhoods were improved and replaced by large modern buildings that strengthened community interaction and support. – SAI: Trái ngược hoàn toàn với thông tin bài đọc; các khối nhà cao tầng mới thay thế được mô tả là buồn tẻ, bất tiện và thất bại trong việc tạo bối cảnh cho sự tương tác hay hỗ trợ ("fail to provide any setting for human interaction or support").
∙ B. There might be little or no significant correlation between the scale of a community and the scope of criminal activity within it. – SAI: Trái ngược thông tin tại đoạn 1, nơi tác giả khẳng định rõ ràng có bằng chứng cho thấy mối quan hệ trực tiếp giữa mức độ tội phạm và quy mô cộng đồng ("its extent has a direct relationship to the size of communities").
∙ C. Urban residents often adopt impersonal behaviours that contribute to greater psychological pressure and decreased social isolation. – SAI: Bị lỗi đảo logic ở phần cuối; việc áp dụng các hành vi phòng vệ này gây ra sự cô đơn lan rộng, tức là làm gia tăng sự cô lập xã hội, chứ không phải làm giảm cô lập ("decreased social isolation").
∙ D. The more affluent move out of inner-city areas, leaving poorer groups confined to places where economic activity has shifted to the suburbs. – ĐÚNG: Đối chiếu chính xác với đoạn 3 của bài viết: Khu vực nội đô bị bỏ lại bởi những người thành đạt hơn ("the more successful") và nhường chỗ cho các nhóm yếu thế; những người này sau đó bị mắc kẹt về mặt địa lý khi các hoạt động kinh tế chuyển dịch ra vùng ngoại ô ("these people are then geographically trapped because so much economic activity has migrated to the suburbs").
Question 8: Where in the paragraph 4 does the following sentence best fit?
"This destruction of established social structures is the worst possible approach to the difficulties of living in a town or city."
A. [I]
B. [III] C. [II]
D. [IV]
A. [I]
B. [III]
C. [II]
D. [IV])
Question 9: Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. Expanding economic activity beyond city centres would likely reduce inequality and improve social conditions for disadvantaged urban populations.
B. Preserving aspects of traditional urban environments could play a role in mitigating certain social and psychological problems in cities.
C. Efforts to strengthen social cohesion in cities may be limited in effectiveness only if underlying structural and environmental issues remain unaddressed.
D. Measures aimed at reducing crime are unlikely to succeed unless individuals alter their defensive behaviours and increase social interaction.
A. Mở rộng hoạt động kinh tế ra ngoài trung tâm thành phố sẽ giảm bất bình đẳng (trái logic - bài nói activity DI CHUYỂN OUT chính là vấn đề khiến poor people mắc kẹt)
B. Bảo tồn các khía cạnh môi trường đô thị truyền thống có thể góp phần GIẢM BỚT một số vấn đề xã hội và tâm lý (đúng - khớp đoạn kết "conserve human scale, retain landmarks")
C. Nỗ lực củng cố gắn kết xã hội CHỈ giới hạn nếu vấn đề cấu trúc không được giải quyết (cường điệu hóa "only if")
D. Biện pháp giảm tội phạm KHÔNG thành công TRỪ KHI cá nhân thay đổi hành vi (cường điệu hóa - bài đề xuất giải pháp môi trường, không phải hành vi))
Giải thích:
∙ A. Expanding economic activity beyond city centres would likely reduce inequality and improve social conditions for disadvantaged urban populations. – SAI: Phương án này đi ngược lại logic bài đọc. Tác giả chỉ ra việc hoạt động kinh tế dịch chuyển ra vùng ngoại ô ("migrated to the suburbs") chính là nguyên nhân cốt lõi khiến nhóm người nghèo bị cô lập và mắc kẹt về địa lý.
∙ B. Preserving aspects of traditional urban environments could play a role in mitigating certain social and psychological problems in cities.
∙ C. Efforts to strengthen social cohesion in cities may be limited in effectiveness only if underlying structural and environmental issues remain unaddressed. – SAI: Phương án mang tính chất cường điệu hóa tuyệt đối khi sử dụng từ giới hạn duy nhất "only if", điều mà bài đọc không hề khẳng định.
∙ D. Measures aimed at reducing crime are unlikely to succeed unless individuals alter their defensive behaviours and increase social interaction. – SAI: Tiếp tục lỗi cường điệu hóa với điều kiện loại trừ tuyệt đối "unless". Bài đọc hướng đến giải pháp vĩ mô mang tính cấu trúc quy hoạch và môi trường sống ở đoạn cuối, chứ không áp đặt mệnh đề cá nhân phải chủ động thay đổi hành vi phòng vệ thì mới giảm được tội phạm
Question 10: Which of the following best summarises the passage?
A. Urban life provides economic wealth but causes social conflict and individual fear, while modern planning fails to support human interaction and prevent widespread community crime.
B. Urban life offers financial rewards but creates individual stress and social isolation, which are further worsened by poor architectural planning and rising criminal activities.
C. Financial motives in cities lead to social strain, which is exacerbated by flawed architectural design and defensive behaviors that undermine community structures.
D. The inherent stresses and dangers of urban life, exacerbated by individual coping mechanisms and flawed urban development, lead to societal breakdown and increased crime.
∙ A. Urban life provides economic wealth but causes social conflict and individual fear, while modern planning fails to support human interaction and prevent widespread community crime.
∙ B. Urban life offers financial rewards but creates individual stress and social isolation, which are further worsened by poor architectural planning and rising criminal activities. – SAI: Tương tự phương án A, câu này thiếu sót nội dung cốt lõi về "individual coping mechanisms" (các chiến lược đối phó gây hại cho cá nhân và xã hội) và đặt "criminal activities" làm tác nhân song song thay vì là kết quả tổng thể.
∙ C.
